The Renaissance (1300s-1600s) is considered a bridge between the Dark Ages of Europe and modern history. Spurred by the events of the later Middle Ages like the Crusades and the Black Death and the rediscovery of Ancient Greek and Roman ideas, there was a shift from a strict, pious lifestyle to one of more secular viewpoints which led to many new artistic pieces, architecture and literature. Many of the things that came out of the Renaissance still impact and inspire us today.
